The Chai Tea Revolution

People who love a hot cup of tea have far more to rejoice these days than any other time in history. If one reads any book, watches any TV show, looks at any movie prior to the year 2000 and “tea” is mentioned, it is always in the generic form. That is to say, tea is just tea; or, more specifically, plain black tea was the only kind of tea people were “exposed” to. Thanks to the expansion and proliferation of all those coffee shop hang outs, an incredible number of blends of coffee and tea have been introduced to the hot beverage lover’s lexicon. One of the most popular of these imports has been Chai tea.
Chai tea originates in India (some mistakenly believe it originates in Thailand as the word “chai” in Thai language means “teacher”) and has been a popular drink in that country for an untold number of years. Chai tea is a spin on the classic black tea blend where black tea is mixed with several indigenous spices to make a truly unique drink. The taste that Chai tea offers is much different and spicier than people were used to in such a beverage so the popularity of it took off faster than anyone expected. Today, there are a number of instant Chai tea mixes that one can purchase in a store to make in the comfort of one’s own home. Certainly the world of the tea drinker has come a long way from being limited to merely using a tea bag and drinking generic Lipton tea!
Now, there are even those who are daring enough to try and make their own Chai tea based on a recipe they may have found in a book or on the internet. Some of these would be tea makers knocked the proverbial ball out of the park with their efforts, others would have been better served had they purchased the instant mix. Oh well, making tea is not for everyone, but apparently drinking it is!
