In Praise of the Sun Tea Jar

For kids growing up in the 1970's, a fad arose that threatened to cut into the brisk business of the soda industry. People began to brew tea using the power of the sun. In those early days, the sun tea jar could be just about any type of glass container that was around the house.

But by far the most popular sun tea jar was the large mouthed one-gallon pickle jar. Armed with a couple of family sized tea bags and a morning that promised to be sunny, kids and young adults would fill their tea jar with water, drop in the teabags and screw on the lid. Next, the jar would be placed in direct sunlight and left to brew for an hour or so. Many people proclaimed that tea made in a tea jar was superior to any conventional type of brewing.

Even though the fad eventually ran its course, the sun tea jar is still going strong today. The old pickle jar still sees sunlight, but these days tea jars come with all sorts of extras. In addition to designer colors, many of the tea jars now come with a serving spout. You can brew your tea in the fresh open air and then bring it inside to cool in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve, simply press the button on the spout and out comes delicious freshly brewed tea.

Some tea jars feature designs that indicate whether the good old fashioned black and orange pekoe is the tea of choice. Others indicate green tea or one of the many herbal tea blends on the market today. Some have a retro look, boasting a glass design that is similar to the large containers used in restaurants. Others advertise that the glass used is especially conducive to the sun brewing process.

Whether your sun tea jar is simple a gallon container that once held pickles or one of the models available with all the extras, sun tea is here to stay. Check out the models sold at fine home and kitchen stores, or go for a simple model from your local discount retail store. Whatever your choice, brewing your favorite tea in a sun tea jar is a lot of fun.
